Διεθνές Συνέδριο: με θέμα "Διασπορά και Μετανάστευση: Διαφορετικότητα, ταυτότητα και μετακινήσεις μέσα και έξω από την Ελλάδα" (Diaspora and Migration:Otherness, identity and movement in and out of Greece) διοργανώνει στις 28-29 Ιουνίου 2007 το Κέντρο Βυζαντινών, Οθωμανικών και Σύγχρονων Ελληνικών Σπουδών του Ινστιτούτου Αρχαιολογίας και Αρχαιόητατς του Πανεπιστημίου του Birmingham.

Diaspora and migration have been two of the most influential and defining factors in the history of modern Greece which have shaped its society, language and culture since the fall of the Byzantine Empire. The aim of the conference, therefore, is to explore the contribution of the Greek diaspora to the making of the modern Greek nation-state by examining its role since the period of the Enlightenment as a channel of western ideas and modernization into Greece and the Balkans; its role in the language controversy in Greece and the development of Greek culture with particular emphasis on some leading diaspora figures such as Adamantios Korais, Yannis Psycharis, Dimitrios Vikelas, C. P. Cavafy, Nicolas Calas, Stratis Tsirkas and other writers and artists who lived or live outside Greece. By focusing on the development of Greek diaspora communities in Europe, America and Australia it will discuss issues of identity, religion and memory and will draw comparisons with other diasporic communities.
The conference will also set out to investigate the impact of migration on Greek society and the transformation of Greece from a country of gastarbeiters in the 1960s to a multicultural society in the late 1990s. Though traditionally Greece was a country of migrants to USA, Australia and Germany, in the 1990s, with the end of the cold war and the disintegration of the Balkans, Greece became a more multicultural and pluralistic society with the influx of economic migrants from neighbouring countries (including Pontic Greeks from the diaspora communities in the former USSR) and the increasing recognition of minorities within Greece. The conference will explore the role of migration in and out of Greece since the Ottoman period, attitudes to migrants inside and outside Greece, economic and social changes, educational and cultural problems, and how issues of otherness, migration and diasporic identity are represented in literature and film. Moreover, it will deal with the implications of the forced exchange of population after the Greco-Turkish War of 1922 and with the lives and activities of political exiles in Eastern Europe in the aftermath of the Greek Civil War (1946-1949).
