English and ICT - How we got to where we are going: An English Experience from the early 1980's to 1999 and future prospects

Abstract
This presentation will trace the impact of various British government initiatives concerned with ICT on the context within which English teachers have been and are working. Initially, interested teachers began by investigating the hypotheses that computers had the potential to support collaborative, creative and independent working; early Action Research projects proved those hypotheses to be valid. The more recent emergence of multimedia and communication technologies has moved teachers towards embracing the concept that ICT has transformed the nature of the subject they teach by broadening the range and type of texts read and written. Major curriculum initiatives coupled with the growth in home access to such technologies have forced English teachers to reassess the significance of ICT and its impact on effective teaching and learning in and beyond the English classroom.
